When I was in high school, I bought a silver bracelet.

A thin one, with small letters engraved along the band: Je suis comme je suis.

I should be honest here: I didn’t buy it for the words. I couldn’t read French. I bought it because it was beautiful — the delicate line of the thing, the letters marching along it in a quiet little procession. That was the whole reason.

The meaning arrived later. I am as I am.

And from the day I learned that, it was a different bracelet. Same silver, same weight on the wrist. But now it said something — to me, and only to me, every time I happened to notice it there.

I had been wearing the words long before I knew I needed them. Things work in that order more often than you’d think.

This year, I’ve been thinking about that bracelet a lot. Why now, after all this time, I couldn’t really tell you. But some memories are like that. They’ll wait decades for their turn.

I read paper books. I don’t fold the corners of pages — I’ve never once managed it, the way some people can’t crack an egg with one hand. Instead I use bookmarks I make myself, out of leather left over in the workshop.

A bookmark says nothing all day. It doesn’t ask to be looked at. It waits inside the book, and when you come back — tomorrow, next week, whenever — it’s exactly where you left it, holding your place without comment.

That, I’ve come to think, is the right distance between a person and their words. Not framed on a wall. Not shouting from a screen. Just kept. Close, silent, exactly where you left them.

Earlier this year I spent three days at a trade fair in New York, standing behind a small table in a room full of things that wanted to be seen.

The room taught me one thing, and it taught it thoroughly: if the reason for an object doesn’t reach someone, the object doesn’t exist for them. It isn’t the thing that’s invisible. It’s the reason.

On the flight home, somewhere over the Pacific, I kept turning this over. You can’t put a reason on display.

But you might be able to carry one.

Japanese has an old word for all of this — kotodama. Written down like that, it looks mystical, and it sometimes gets translated in ways that make it sound like something out of folklore. The way it actually lives in daily life is far plainer. It’s a feeling — older than any explanation of it — that words are not entirely weightless. That a word kept close behaves differently from a word left lying around.

I doubt the feeling is particularly Japanese, to be honest. A photograph in a wallet. A ticket stub that has survived every single spring cleaning. A letter that stayed in a coat pocket long after it was answered.

Everyone has carried words. Most of us just never got around to calling it anything.

So when the leather bandage finally became Grain Patch, one decision mattered more than all the others put together.

The words would not be visible.

Nothing is printed on the surface. The leather shows its grain, a small gold crest, a few raised dots — and that’s all. The words are inside. Written once, then sealed.

Hold your phone over the patch, and they appear. Put the phone away, and they withdraw, like something slipping back underwater.

There is an old fable about a woodcutter who drops his axe into a spring. A spirit rises from the water holding a golden axe — is this the one you lost? Then a silver one. In that story, honesty gets rewarded generously.

I’ll say it up front: the patch runs a more modest operation. What rises when you hold your phone over it is exactly what you dropped in. Your own words. No gold, no silver, no spirit.

Depending on the day, that seems to me the better eal.

If the words sat on the surface, they would turn into decoration. A slogan, worn outward, performing for whoever happens to walk past.

Sealed inside, they stay what they are. Words. Yours. Facing you and no one else.

It took me years to notice that the bracelet had been doing the same trick all along.

Its words sat right out in the open — engraved, polished, there for anyone to see. But they were in French, and where I lived, hardly anyone happened to read French. The words were published and hidden at the same time. A secret in plain sight, wearing the disguise of an ornament.

Maybe that’s why I never got tired of them. They didn’t perform. They just waited for me to look.

You can’t see them. You just know they’re there.

Which leaves exactly one question — the one this whole object was built to ask.

見えない言葉

Grain Patch 連載 第3回（全4回）

高校生のとき、シルバーのブレスレットを買った。

細いバンドに、小さな文字が刻まれていた。Je suis comme je suis.

正直に言うと、言葉に惹かれて買ったのではない。フランス語は読めなかった。買ったのは、それがきれいだったからだ。華奢な線と、その上を静かな行列みたいに進んでいく文字の並び。理由はそれで全部だった。

意味はあとからやって来た。「私は、私のままでいる」。

それを知った日から、それは別のブレスレットになった。同じ銀で、手首の上のも同じ。でも今や、それは何かを言うのだった——僕に、僕にだけ、ふと目に入るたびに。

必要だと知るずっと前から、僕はその言葉を身につけていたわけだ。物事は、思っているよりずっと頻繁に、その順番で起こる。

今年に入ってから、あのブレスレットのことをよく思い出す。なぜ今になって、と訊かれても答えられない。でも記憶にはそういうところがある。自分の出番を、何十年でも待っているのだ。

僕は紙の本を読む。ページの角は折らない。一度も折れたためしがない。片手で卵を割れない人がいるのと、たぶん同じことだ。かわりに、工房で余った革で自分の栞を作って使っている。

栞は一日じゅう何も言わない。見てくれと頼まない。本の中で待っていて、こちらが戻ってくると——明日でも、来週でも、いつでも——置いた場所に正確にいて、何のコメントもなしに続きを持っていてくれる。

それが、人と言葉のあいだの正しい距離なんじゃないかと、僕は思うようになった。額に入れて壁に掛けるのでもなく、画面の中で叫ばせるのでもなく。ただ、持っている。近くに、静かに、置いた場所のままに。

今年のはじめ、ニューヨークの見本市で三日間、小さなテーブルの後ろに立っていた。見られたがっているものであふれた、大きな部屋の中でのことだ。

あの部屋が教えてくれたことはひとつだで、そのかわり徹底的に教えてくれた。理由が相手に届かなければ、そのものは相手にとって存在しない。見えていないのは、ものではない。理由のほうなのだ。

帰りの飛行機の中で、太平洋の上のどこかで、僕はそのことを何度もひっくり返して考えた。理由は、陳列できない。

でも、持ち歩くことなら、できるかもしれない。

日本語には、この感覚の全体を指す古い言葉がある。言霊、という。こうして文字にすると神秘的に見えるし、実際、民話の中の何かみたいに聞こえる説明をされることもある。でも、この言葉が日々の暮らしの中で生きている姿は、ずっと素朴だ。言葉は完全には無重量ではないらしい、という——どんな説明よりも古い——感覚。近くに置かれた言葉は、そのへんに放っておかれた言葉とは、違うふるまいをする。

正直なところ、この感覚が特別に日本的だとも思わない。財布の中の写真。何度の大掃除もくぐり抜けてきた半券。返事を出したあとも、コートのポケットに居座りつづけた手紙。

言葉を持ち歩いたことのない人は、たぶんいない。ただ、ほとんどの人は、それに名前をつけるところまで手が回らなかっただけだ。

だから、革の絆創膏がようやくGrain Patchになったとき、他のすべてを合わせたより重要な決定がひとつあった。

言葉は、見えないようにする。

表面には何も印刷されていない。革の銀面と、小さな金の紋章と、点の並び。それで全部だ。言葉は中にある。一度だけ書き込まれ、それから封じられて。

スマホをかざすと、言葉は現れる。しまうと、退いていく。何かが水面の下へすっと戻っていくみたいに。

古い寓話に、木こりが泉に斧を落とす話がある。水の中から精霊が現れて、金の斧を掲げる——あなたが落としたのは、この斧ですか？　次は銀の斧。あの話では、正直さは気前よく報われることになっている。

先に言っておくと、このパッチはもっとつつましい商売をしている。スマホをかざしたとき水面から上がってくるのは、自分が落としたもの、そのものだ。自分の言葉。金もなし、銀もなし、精霊もなし。

日によっては、そちらのほうがずっと良い取引に思える。

言葉が表面に載っていたら、それは装飾になってしまう。外側に向けて着る、通りかかった誰かのためのスローガンに。

封じられていれば、言葉は言葉のままでいる。あなたのもので、あなたのほうだけを向いている。

あのブレスレットが最初から同じ手品を使っていたことに、僕は何年もかかって気づいた。

言葉は堂々と表に出ていた——刻まれて、磨かれて、誰の目にも見える場所に。でもそれはフランス語で、僕の住む町で、フランス語を読む人はほとんどいなかった。あの言葉は、公開されていて、同時に隠されていた。装飾のふりをした、白昼の秘密だった。

だから、何年つけていても疲れなかったのかもしれない。あの言葉は一度も演技をしなかった。ただ、僕が見るのを待っていた。

見えない。ただ、そこにあることだけを、あなたは知っている。

残る問いは、ちょうどひとつ。この物体の全体が、その問いをするために作られた。

One day, it did.

The name was Grain Patch.

For a long time before that, the thing had no name at all.

The white prototype sat on a corner of my desk while I worked on other things. Every so often I picked it up, turned it over a few times, and put it back down. It didn’t seem to mind. It just sat there with the face of a small ghost — the ghost of something that hadn’t been born yet.

I knew plenty about what it wasn’t. It wasn’t a leather accessory. It wasn’t a digital business card. It wasn’t a gadget — nothing that quiet has ever been a gadget. Naming what a thing isn’t is easy work. You can keep at it for weeks and get nowhere. I speak from experience.

And the real question — what is this thing I’m trying to make? — I asked often enough. The question kept politely declining to answer.

My workroom, by the way, contains surprisingly little leather for a leather brand. A MacBook wired to two monitors. A Logitech keyboard and mouse I’ve been loyal to for years. A 3D printer. A cutting machine that cuts material exactly as the data tells it to. That’s the whole room.

Everything in it answers to a name. Most of it answers to a model number, too. And in the middle of all that well-named equipment sat the one object that answered to nothing.

It wasn’t an unpleasant silence. But it was there, the way a missing tooth is there.

Then one afternoon, apropos of nothing, I found myself thinking about bandages. Real ones.

A bandage doesn’t heal a wound. That isn’t its job, and it has never once pretended otherwise. Its job is to stay close — through the hours and days it takes — without asking to be noticed, without demanding a thing. It is simply there, quietly, until the day it isn’t needed anymore. And then it leaves without a speech.

Something about that felt exactly right. I can’t explain it better than that. It was simply, precisely, it.

I didn’t want to change whoever would carry this thing. I didn’t want to inspire them or instruct them — the world already has more than enough things trying to do that. I wanted it just to be there. In the wallet. In the bag. Near the skin. The way something small can accompany a life without making any claim on it.

So that was the Patch. Half of the name had been sitting in the first-aid box all along.

Then there was the Grain.

Leather has a grain — the natural pattern pressed into its surface. Every hide carries its own, worked into it by years of movement and weather, and no two are alike. Leather is strict on this point. About as strict as fingerprints.

So far, so much leather-craft talk.

But the word reaches further than that.

The grain of wood. A grain of sand. The grain of a voice. The way a thing naturally becomes itself — the texture that tells you what something is made of.

People have a grain too. The way a person walks. The way they think. The words they keep going back to, again and again, mostly without noticing. Their own grain — particular, unrepeatable, already there long before anyone points it out.

I didn’t want to make something that would change a person’s grain. Plenty of things are in that business already.

I wanted to make something that would stay alongside it.

A patch that belonged to the grain of whoever carried it.

When the two words finally sat down next to each other, there were no other candidates. There never had been, apparently. I just hadn’t been introduced.

I said the name out loud a few times, to see how it walked around the room.

It walked fine.

The leather ones, by the way, are made from a single piece of hide.

The raised pad in the center is not a part attached on top. The small dots at either end are not set in. There is no cutting and no joining anywhere — the whole form is persuaded out of one flat piece of leather, using nothing but heat, pressure, and patience. The grain runs unbroken from end to end.

I was stubborn about this in a way that puzzled even me. The reason arrived later, the way reasons tend to, around here.

An object shaped like a bandage shouldn’t begin its life by being cut.

It felt exactly that simple.

The app that writes into it needed a name too.

That one took about a minute. Writing a word into leather is a kind of sealing — the way a letter used to be closed with wax, and stayed closed until it reached the right hands. The object itself is a seal too, a small thing you press onto what you carry. And a bandage, come to think of it, is also something you seal over skin.

Three directions, one word — like three people turning up at the same café at the same hour, none of them having arranged a thing.

Seal.

There is one more thing already written on every patch, before its owner writes anything at all.

A few raised dots, pressed into the leather. Most people will take them for the air holes of a bandage, which is fine. They’re meant to pass for that.

They’re braille. They read: ID.

Identification — because someone who cannot see can hold this patch out, and it will do the talking.

And identity — because whatever you choose to put inside it ends up being, in some small way, a description of who you are.

Looking back, I don’t feel I named any of it.

It’s closer to say that these things had known their names for a long time, and had been waiting — patiently, without any particular complaint — for someone to notice.

So now it had a name, a shape, and a place to keep things.

What it didn’t have yet was an answer to the harder question.

What kind of words deserve to be carried around?

I had a feeling about this one from the start. It wasn’t going to answer politely, either.

名前を授かること

ある日、その時が来た。

名前は、Grain Patchといった。

その日が来るまで、長いあいだ、そのものには名前がまったくなかった。

白い試作品は、机の隅に座っていた。僕がほかの仕事をしているあいだも、ずっとだ。ときどき手に取って、何度かひっくり返して、また元の場所に戻した。向こうが気にしている様子はなかった。まだ生まれていない何かの、小さな幽霊みたいな顔をして、ただそこに座っていた。

それが「何でないか」なら、いくらでも知っていた。革のアクセサリーではない。デジタル名刺でもない。ガジェットでもない——あんなに静かなガジェットを、僕は見たことがない。何でないかを数えるのは楽な仕事だ。何週間でも続けられるし、そしてどこにも辿り着かない。経験者として言っている。

肝心の問い——自分はいったい何を作ろうとしているのか？——なら、飽きるほど口にした。問いのほうは、丁寧に回答を辞退しつづけた。

ところで、革のブランドをやっている人間の作業部屋にしては、僕の部屋には驚くほど革気がない。モニターを二台つないだMacBook Proが一台。長年義理を通しているロジ社製のキーボードとマウス。3Dプリンター。素材をデータの言うとおりに切り抜くカッティングマシーン。部屋にあるのは、それで全部だ。

どれも、呼べば返事をする名前を持っている。たいていは型番まで持っている。そのよく名付けられた機材のまんなかに、何にも返事をしないただひとつの物体が座っていた。

嫌な沈黙ではなかった。でも、確かにそこにあった。抜けた歯が、そこに「ある」のと同じように。

そしてある午後、何の脈絡もなく、気がつくと絆創膏のことを考えていた。本物の絆創膏のことだ。

絆創膏は傷を治さない。それは彼らの仕事ではないし、彼らは一度だってそういうふりをしたことがない。彼らの仕事は、そばにいることだ。必要なだけの時間——気づいてくれと頼むこともなく、何かを要求することもなく。ただ静かにそこにいて、要らなくなった日が来ると、スピーチもなしに退場していく。

それだ、と思った。うまく説明できないのだけれど、それは正確に「それ」だった。

これを持つことになる人を、変えたいわけではなかった。励ましたいわけでも、教え導きたいわけでもない——そういうことをしたがるものなら、世の中にもう十分すぎるほどある。ただ、そこにいてほしかった。財布の中に。鞄の中に。肌の近くに。小さなものが、何の権利も主張せずに、誰かの日々に付き添っていくみたいに。

それがPatchだった。名前の半分は、最初から救急箱の中に座っていたわけだ。

次はGrainだ。

革にはグレインというものがある。表面に刻まれた自然の模様のことだ。一枚一枚の革が自分のグレインを持っている。何年ぶんの動きと天候がそこに練り込まれていて、同じものはふたつとない。この点について、革は厳格だ。指紋と同じくらい厳格だ。

——と、ここまでなら革職人の講釈である。

でもこの言葉は、もう少し遠くまで届く。

木目。砂粒。声の質感。何かが自然に自分自身になっていくときの、その方向。それが何でできているかを教えてくれる手触り。

人にもグレインがある。歩き方。考え方。ほとんど気づかないまま、何度も何度も戻っていく言葉。その人だけのグレイン——固有で、かけがえがなくて、誰かに指摘されるずっと前からそこにあるもの。

人のグレインを変えるようなものを、作りたいわけではなかった。その商売なら、もう十分に間に合っている。

そのグレインの隣に、いてくれるものを作りたかった。

持つ人のグレインに属する、パッチを。

ふたつの言葉がようやく隣同士に座ったとき、他の候補はひとつもなかった。どうやら最初からなかったらしい。僕が紹介されていなかっただけで。

その名前を、部屋の中でどんなふうに歩くのか、何度か声に出して試してみた。

ちゃんと歩いた。

ところで、革のほうの本物は、一枚の革から作られている。

中央のふくらみは、上から貼りつけたパーツではない。両端の小さなドットも、埋め込んだものではない。どこにも切れ目がなく、どこにも継ぎ目がない——熱と、圧力と、根気だけを使って、一枚の平らな革から、かたちの全部を説き伏せるように立ち上げている。銀面は端から端まで、一度も途切れない。

ここについての僕のこだわりは、自分でも不思議なくらい頑固だった。理由はあとからやって来た。このあたりでは、理由というのはたいていあとから来る。

絆創膏のかたちをしたものが、切られることから生まれるべきじゃない。

それだけの、単純な話だった。

書き込むためのアプリにも、名前が要った。

こちらは一分くらいで済んだ。言葉を革に書き込むというのは、一種の封入だ——手紙が封蝋で閉じられて、正しい手に届くまで閉じたままでいたように。この物体そのものも、持ち物に貼りつける小さなシールだ。そして絆創膏だって、考えてみれば、肌の上に貼って封をするものである。

三つの方向から、同じひとつの言葉がやって来た。誰も約束などしていないのに、三人が同じ喫茶店の同じ時刻に現れるみたいに。

Seal。

すべてのパッチには、持ち主が何かを書き込むより前から、すでに書き込まれているものがひとつある。

革に型押しされた、小さな点の並びだ。たいていの人は絆創膏の通気孔だと思うだろうし、それで構わない。そう見えるように作ってある。

あれは点字で、「ID」と読む。

Identification——目の見えない人がこのパッチを差し出せば、パッチが代わりに喋ってくれるから。

そしてIdentity——中に何を入れるかを選んだ時点で、それはその人がどういう人間かの、小さな記述になってしまうから。

振り返ってみると、どれについても、自分が名付けたという実感がない。

それぞれが自分の名前をとっくに知っていて、誰かが気づくのを——特に文句を言うでもなく、辛抱づよく——待っていた。そう言うほうが近い。

こうして、名前と、かたちと、ものをしまう場所ができた。

まだなかったのは、もっと難しい問いへの答えだ。

いったいどんな言葉なら、持ち歩くに値するのだろう？

この問いについては、最初から予感があった。こちらも、丁寧に回答を辞退してくるだろうという予感が。

Grain Patch — Part 1 of 4

There is a strange object sitting on my desk.

A bandage, made of leather. The small adhesive kind — the kind you’d find in a medicine cabinet anywhere in the world.

It doesn’t heal anything. It was never meant to heal anything. And for a long time, even I couldn’t have told you what it was for — which is a strange thing to admit about something you made with your own hands. But that’s how it was.

This is the story of how it came to have this shape.

For a long time — I couldn’t tell you exactly how long — I had been thinking about wounds.

Not just the kind that bleed. Those at least have the decency to announce themselves. I mean the quieter kind. The kind the heart hangs on to for years without mentioning it to anyone. The kind time leaves on us — needing something and not being able to reach it, the small daily losses nobody bothers to name.

I had no idea what to do with this thought. It wasn’t the sort of thought that leads anywhere in particular. I just kept it near me, the way you keep a stone picked up on some beach for reasons you can no longer remember.

Around the same time, in a different notebook, there was another idea.

A time capsule made of leather — more or less. A small object that would hold on to something for years and then, one day, hand it back intact.

There was one problem with it, and I couldn’t solve it. It needed a chip inside, a thing about as thin as a fingernail, and the chip needed somewhere to live. I tried one place after another. Every one of them looked like I was hiding something — which, in a way, I suppose I was. So the idea stalled, and I set it aside and let it gather dust.

A leather bandage that healed nothing.

A capsule with nowhere to put its heart.

Two ideas in two notebooks, sitting on the same shelf, ignoring each other for months. Ideas can be like that.

Eventually I started making samples of the bandage. Different sizes, printed one after another on a 3D printer, and at night I would sit in front of the screen fixing the drawings — the way you fix anything at night, slowly, with more coffee than is probably good for you.

Every one of those bandages, anywhere in the world, has a raised center. The pad, the part that rests over the wound. I had drawn that pad for exactly one reason: without it, the shape stops reading as a bandage. It was there so that anyone, in any country, would look at the thing and know what it was in about half a second.

One night I was adjusting that pad on the screen, and I stopped.

The pad was hollow.

It was exactly the size of the chip.

The part of a bandage that exists to protect the wound was the one place a memory could live.

The two notebooks quietly became one notebook.

I want to be accurate about that day. I didn’t design a function. I’m not that clever. A shape that already meant something simply made room, on its own, for the thing that needed a place to stay.

All I did was happen to be sitting there when it did.

What went inside, and why — that took longer. I’ll get to it.

Something was beginning to form.

It didn’t need a name yet.

かたちが先だった

机の上に、奇妙なものがひとつ載っている。

革でできた絆創膏だ。どこの国の薬箱にも入っている、あの小さな貼るやつのことだ。

貼っても何も治らない。もともと治すために作られていない。おまけにしばらくのあいだ、作った本人にさえ、それが何のためのものなのか説明できなかった。自分の手で作ったものについてこんなことを言うのはずいぶん妙な話だけれど、実際そうだったのだから仕方ない。

これは、それがこのかたちになるまでの話だ。

長いあいだ——正確にどれくらいかと訊かれると困るのだが——僕は「傷」について考えていた。

血の出る傷のことだけではない。ああいうものは少なくとも、自分から名乗り出てくれる。そうではなくて、もっと静かな傷のことだ。心が何年も抱えたまま、誰にも打ち明けない種類の傷。時間が僕らにつけていく傷——必要なものに、必要なときに手が届かないこと。誰もわざわざ名前をつけない、日々の小さな喪失。

その考えをどうすればいいのか、僕にはわからなかった。どこかに通じている種類の考えでもなかった。ただ手放さずに持っていた。どこかの浜辺で、理由ももう思い出せないまま拾った石を、捨てずに持っているみたいに。

同じ頃、別のノートには、もうひとつの構想があった。

革でできたタイムカプセル——まあ、だいたいそういうものだ。何かを何年も預かっておいて、ある日、そっくりそのまま返してくれる小さな物体。

これにはひとつ問題があって、それがどうしても解けなかった。中に爪くらいの薄さのチップを収める必要があり、チップには居場所が要る。あちこち試してみた。どこに置いても、何かを隠しているようにしか見えなかった。まあ、ある意味では実際に隠していたわけだけれど。それで構想は止まり、僕はそれを脇に置いて、埃をかぶるにまかせた。

何も治さない、革の絆創膏。

心臓の置き場所のない、カプセル。

ふたつの構想がふたつのノートに入って、同じ棚の上で、何か月も互いを無視していた。アイデアというのは、そういうことをする。

やがて僕は絆創膏のサンプルを作りはじめた。サイズ違いを3Dプリンターで次々に出力し、夜になると画面の前に座って図面を直した。夜に何かを直すときのやり方で——つまりゆっくりと、たぶん体に良くない量のコーヒーと一緒に。

世界中のどの絆創膏にも、中央にふくらみがある。パッドと呼ばれる、傷の上に載る部分だ。僕があのパッドを描いた理由はきっかりひとつしかなかった。あれがないと、絆創膏に見えないのだ。どこの国の誰が見ても、半秒でこれが何だかわかるように、あれはそこにあった。

ある夜、そのパッドを画面の上で直していて、僕は手を止めた。

パッドの中は、空洞だった。

チップと、ぴったり同じ大きさだった。

絆創膏の、傷を守るためにある部分が、記憶の住める唯一の場所だった。

ふたつのノートは、静かに一冊になった。

その日のことは、正確に書いておきたい。僕は機能を設計したわけではない。そんなに頭が良くない。すでに意味を持っていたかたちが、居場所を必要としていたものに、勝手に場所を空けたのだ。

僕がしたことといえば、そのときたまたまそこに座っていたことくらいだ。

中に何を入れるのか、それはなぜか——そこから先は、もう少し時間がかかった。順番に書いていく。

何かが形になりはじめていた。
